My dream in pursuing internet marketing has always been to have a home based business in which I basically worked for myself and did not have to answer to anyone. I currently have a full time day job, complete with a boss and a whole slew of nutty coworkers, so I have plenty of incentive to make this dream into a reality.
Currently I make an average of a little over a $1,000 dollars per month from my full time job. Not great, but enough to pay my bills and keep me happy.
In addition to that, I am currently making about $400 per month from my online business properties. I have built this up slowly over the period of a year or two and it is a solid, sustainable income. My goal is to keep pushing that income level up until it exceeds my day job income. Then you can guess what I will do when that finally happens!
How difficult is it to replicate what I am doing? Not very hard at all. Essentially I have a website (just one!) that is making me that $400 per month in almost entirely passive income. Now, it is true that I have created several other websites along the way, some with the intention of making money with them, but most of them with the intention of supporting my main money site.
This is not difficult to do. If you can go to blogger.com and simply sign up for a new blog then you can make money online. Of course, the money does not just fall from the sky, but if you do a bit of keyword research and then put in about an hour each day with a solid post, you can make money over the long haul.
Essentially it is a 3 part plan to build a website that generates free traffic every day. Once you have the free traffic rolling in, it is just a matter of monetizing that traffic (generally by putting up Google Adsense):
1) Find the right keywords to target
2) Write content that targets those keywords
3) Build links to your content with good anchor text.
What is good anchor text? It is the same thing you are trying to rank for. If you build lots of links to your content with good anchor text, then Google will rank you very high up in their search results and you will get a lot of traffic this way. So building links is key.
So these 3 steps are the whole key to making money online and if you consistently do these steps then you can easily build up an asset that keeps generating money over and over again for you.
The website that I have now that makes $400 each month is an asset. I could actually go into a coma for a month and not touch my website and guess what? It would still make $400 over the next month. That is a real business…in fact, that is much more attractive than most businesses you might own!
There are no customers to deal with, no orders to ship, no inventory to manage, no employees to handle, and so on. All you do is put up good content on the web and Google runs their advertising along side of it. If you rank well in the search engines then you will get a lot of traffic to your website and a small percentage of that traffic will click on your ads. Then you get a check each month from Google.
That’s it. There is not much more to it. Sure there are some other things you can do, other ways to add more streams of income, but that is it in a nutshell. Build a website, get traffic, convert that traffic into money. If you are looking for a home based business that you can start up quickly and easily (and cheap), then this would be a great route to go. You can even use a free blog over at blogger.com that will not cost you a dime to get started. And I personally know of at least one guy who makes over a hundred bucks per day in Adsense income from one single blogger blog….that he did not have to pay a dime to start.
Why start a home based business?
There are a number of good reasons to start your own business, even if it is a fairly small operation and doesn’t really make a full time income. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages:
1) No longer dependent on your day job. Face it, you could be fired at any moment, or your place of employment could go out of business. Or your position could be cut. Etc.
2) More money = more cushion. Right now I still have my day job, but I also have an extra $400 per month rolling in. This like, helps. Duh.
3) Having a business = good contingency planning. If you fall sick or ill and cannot work for several months, chances are good that you can keep operating your home business.
4) Freedom from daily grind / office politics.
5) Financially, it is better than sitting on the couch and watching television every night. You are producing an income generating asset for your future.
Location independent business = even better
If you can start a home business that can actually be done on the road or in your local coffee shop, then that is even better. Why? Let’s take a look:
1) A completely mobile business gives you the flexibility to travel as needed, and also it gives you more time flexibility as well, because part of having a location-dependent business is going to be the time investment of traveling to and from the business, even if that location is your own home. We all leave home at times, so a location-independent business is really ideal.
2) If you desire, you can leverage geographical arbitrage by living in lower cost areas, while still earning the same amount from your business because it is location-independent.
3) Work less, travel more. With a location-independent business, the mantra becomes “work while traveling.” Much more flexible.
4) “I can’t go on vacation, I have to work” becomes “I am always on vacation, because I can work anywhere.”
What are you waiting for?
There is nothing stopping you or anyone else from going to Google and doing some keyword research, then starting up a blog and churning out some decent content. There is a learning curve but quite honestly it is not that steep. If all you ever did was concentrate on the 3 fundamentals you would be just fine (keyword research, write content, build links). That is all it takes in this game to make real money and I am doing it right out of my own home to the tune of about $400 bucks per month.
This might not sound like a ton of money but keep in mind that it is almost completely passive income and I only work on this stuff for about one hour per day. That comes out to an hourly rate of about 13 bucks an hour, but just wait until I am making $1,200 per month (this is my 2 year goal but right now it looks like I might get there in closer to a year). At that point my hourly rate will be 40 bucks an hour….not bad at all for the lazy schedule of putting in only one hour each day!
From there the hourly rate will only continue to increase, making the money become more and more passive. At some point it is even possible to outsource all of the minor tasks to be performed on the website, and then you have a completely sustainable business with maybe one employee who keeps it running. You will have achieved 100 percent complete time freedom, and generating income for your life will no longer consume hardly any of your time at all (just an hour or two each month to manage your employee and set tasks for them).
Of course this last step is optional, as I thoroughly enjoy posting every day about topics that I am passionate about (that is what my money site is all about, of course!).
So what are you waiting for? Get started on your home based business today…..
