How to Deal with the Emotional Turmoil from Fluctuating AdSense Income as You Check Stats 20 Times Per Day

by Patrick Meninga

So how can you deal with the emotional turmoil from your fluctuating online income?

There are a few key strategies to use for this problem:

* Do not create businesses where the income fluctuates wildly from day to day – this is easier said than done, especially in the online world. One way that you can get a smoother and more steady stream of income is to diversify across traffic sources. So that would mean that instead of relying on Google for 80 percent of your traffic, you would chase some other sources of traffic that all convert at a decent rate for you, and then maybe Google would only account for 35 percent of your traffic. That way, if the search algorithms update and your site gets whacked, you would only see about a 35 percent reduction in income rather than an 80 percent reduction. Big difference. That said, it is very difficult to get significant traffic from other sources, especially traffic that is not completely worthless and has a chance of converting.

* Do not look at your daily income – again, easier said than done. If you are someone who checks your stats every day or even several times throughout the day, then you might want to consider the idea of a “stat checking fast” where you only check your stats once a week, like every Saturday morning for example. Then you can look at the income for the entire previous week, all at once, look things over, nod your head, and then move on with your life, knowing full well that you will NOT check your stats at all for another full week. This sounds a bit simple but for some people it can absolutely be life-changing in how powerful it is.

* Do not use AdSense as your primary income source – one thing that you might try to do is to find an advertiser to go direct with, and sell that advertiser 100 percent of your traffic. They can pay you each month a negotiated rate, probably based on past AdSense income history. For example, maybe your site makes $500 dollars per month, so you might charge the Advertiser that same amount for the next 6 months for exclusive advertising on your site. Now your income is no longer fluctuating, and you can stop your contract and re evaluate after six months is up. One thing you might do at that point is to put your AdSense back up for a while, then see what kind of monthly revenue you are getting, and negotiate a new rate from there.

One final tip is that you need to base your success in online marketing with how much work you produce each day, not how much income you bring in. The income will probably always fluctuate to some extent, so look at the main thing that you can control: your work output. How many articles did you write today? If the answer is “very few” or “zero” then it is understandable that you feel slightly out of control or helpless.

Take positive action every day towards your income goals, and let the results speak for themselves in due time.
