This dude says to me the other day “I need to make money.” He was referring to his online internet marketing efforts.
Of course if you are building up passive income streams online, then “needing to make money” is not a good place for you to be. Why not? Because it takes time to make money this way.
If you want to make fast money then you are going to have to work hard for it. Go write some freelance articles for Textbroker or something. Sit there and type like you have a gun pointed at your head and you can make 30 bucks per day, no problem. But it is hard work and it sucks. So most people won’t do it.
Building passive income via SEO and internet marketing is no walk in the park either. Sure, if you’ve been working your tail off for 5 years on it, then it all looks so easy. But who has the discipline to put in hard work, every day, in order to see passive earnings like that down the road?
It doesn’t take 5 years for it to kick in, either….especially if you are smart. But I was never that smart. Took me about 2 years before I figured out how to target keywords and really start bringing in any sort of search traffic. It has taken me another 2 years to figure out that there are no shortcuts, and you have to put up lots of keyword targeted content and build links in order to hit the payday. Now I am cranking the work out like a madman. Finally. Took me quite a while to get there.
You don’t have to learn much, really. It takes about one month worth of learning, and really you could compress that into 3 hours if you were disciplined enough. But we have a tendency to look for tricks, tips, shortcuts, and so on. But in the end it all comes back to building pages and building links.
Here is the revelation I just had about internet marketing. I think this quote originally came from Seth Godin, I could be wrong. He said something like “we overestimate what we can accomplish in a year, but underestimate what we can accomplish in 5 years.” Or something like that.
How does this apply to internet marketing? Approximately like this:
“When it comes to making money online, we overestimate what we can do in a single month, but we underestimate what we can do in a year.”
Note that the time scale is a bit different than what Seth said, but the idea is the same.
It is frustrating with passive earnings, that you can work your tail off for a month, and not really see any gains. So we are frequently disappointed. But if you work your tail off for a year, and then look back a full 12 months and compare earnings, you will be like “Dang, boy! I come a long ways!”
And so it is. We check out earnings every single day, and get discouraged because we cannot see growth. We should be checking more like twice a year, while still finding the motivation to work like a dog every single day. This is the mental tenacity that you need to build an online empire.
I have sort of found it, as I am racing to a thousand posts and will definitely get there in under 6 months at my current rate. But I still get discouraged when I check my daily earnings…..

Don’t forget in your 1000 article quest it takes time for things to find their groove and start counting towards your aim. G likes to give a wide birth before it lets things ratchet up. I always blast something out there and wait a good 3+ weeks before examining how it has done. The worth thing you can do is keep hammering the same thing over and over and end up in the slow and endless sandbox. Not that I have any real idea on how you do things. But the slow grow is a huge part of doing targeted keywords on the net. If it wasn’t can you imagine how many people would have really crummy sites at the top.
Also, don’t forget to target some rich keywords like “last minute (deals, flights, hotels… anything)”, “quick help…” and things like that. A lot of times these go unnoticed and have huge CTR. Good luck on your 1000 post quest.
Hello. This article was really remarkable, especially since I was investigating for thoughts on this subject last Thursday.
I’ve added this article to my favorites browser link bar because I want to read it again. I agree on a lot of the viewpoints you have written, but I feel the need to consider some aspects, and I really admire your blog. It goes without saying I also like the design of your website, incredibly imaginative. Cheers.
