Increasing Passive Income Starts with Keyword Research

So I recently bought 30 days worth of a keyword tool called SEMrush. It seems pretty darn good so far, even if I only find a couple of keywords with it that end up making me money, then it will be a good investment. There are other ways of doing keyword research without spending a dime, of course, and you can always find some free seo tools out there if you don’t have the cash to spend on a professional tool such as SEMrush.

So I have a website that has some decent authority to it, not a ton, but it has a bit of juice and the ability to rank somewhat quickly in the eyes of Google. Now it can rank fast for medium to low competitive terms but it does not rank on page one or anything right off the bat. To do that I still need to build links but ultimately it is nice to be able to write a post, target a new keyword phrase, and start ranking for it within a few days time.

Once you have a website that is making passive income from contextual advertising, you should basically have one of 2 goals in mind:

1) Build other, similar websites

2) Expand your existing site to make more money

Presumably, option number 2 is easier to do than option number 1. I believe this to be true because it took me a long time to really see growth and progress with my current money site. It seems like it would take a monumental effort to get back to that position again with a brand new domain.

The second strategy is therefore much more appealing to me. I already have a known site that can rank somewhat well for new keywords, so why not leverage that and start ranking for new keywords? And so that is precisely my main strategy right now and that is what I’m going to focus on.

Doing so has 3 steps in my mind:

1) Keyword research – finding new keywords to target.

2) Writing content – actually creating the article to target the new keywords with.

3) Building links – necessary in order to move the website up in the rankings.

So here is my time line for the next few months or so…..I have just canceled all of my promotional tools that help me to build legitimate links, and instead I am going to do the following 2 things over the summer:

1) Find about 100 to 500 new keywords to target.

2) Publish articles on my money site to target those keywords.

After a few months and about 50 to 100 new articles later, I will shift back into link building mode and see if I can’t boost my rankings on some of these new keywords.

I think this is a sound strategy for my particular niche because my site is currently making $350/month from long tail keywords. My main keywords that make the most money for me account for less than 10% of my total income! This is crazy. My site makes money from the long tail, and it is a bit too competitive for me to attack the head. If you want to know more about how the dynamic between these two approaches works out, then consider following a popular seo blog.

With that in mind, my best strategy right now is to build a massive keyword list and focus on daily articles that target those keywords. This is difficult to do and I feel like it is the equivalent of doing homework.

But I gotta do it if I am going to escape the daily grind of 9 to 5 land…….
