The Benefits of Owning and Writing a Large Website Rather than a Small Niche Site that Relies Heavily on Strong Linking

by Patrick Meninga

Some people still wonder if there are serious benefits to owning and publishing a very large website rather than several small niche sites.

There is a strong tendency for people to scream about “diversification!” It sounds like such a smart thing to do. Why wouldn’t you? Everyone wants to be safe, well protected, diversified.

But I think it is a huge mistake. And people who are much smarter than I am have said the same thing–for example, Warren Buffet. If you diversify too much, you can never beat the market. All you can do is mirror it.

So when it comes to building your online income, the question you need to ask yourself is:

“How many times do I want to build domain authority?”

For me the answer is “Just once!”

So what are we talking about when we talk about building domain authority?

If you start a brand new website and buy a never-before-used URL and you put up a few dozen articles, or even a few hundred articles, guess what?

Nobody cares.

I don’t care if your articles are freaking outstanding! It does not matter. No one will care.

Yet.

If you build an awesome website and you do not build any links and you do not have much age then YOU LOSE.

In order to have lots of search engine traffic every day, you are going to need plenty of domain authority.

And that has to be built, over time. Painstakingly.

It’s hard to do.

It’s very hard to do.

It is hard to do when you just have one website to worry about.

I cannot imagine how these people with 10 or twenty websites manage to build any kind of real domain authority.

And of course all of this begs the question: How does one actually build authority?

I would say all of this stuff helps:

1) Age.
2) Incoming links.
3) Size of the website (how many articles you have published).

If your site is brand new and has 5 articles and no incoming links, you lose. No income for you.

On the other hand, if your site is 5 years old and has 2,500 articles and mountains of incoming organic links, then you probably have a nice full time income from that website.

Now if you go the route of owning one very large website and building it up every single day and doing so for several years, then you do not need to worry about building links as much as the niche site people.

Those poor niche site folks….they have to build links for every single domain that they start. What a nightmare.

If you just have one authority site, you only have to do it once.

And after you have built links and new content for a few years, then eventually you reach a point where you only have to create new content if you want to grow the website.

If you make niche sites, you better have some really strong link building tools up your sleeve (and if you do, then why are you wasting your time with niche sites anyway? Make a big authority site!)
