“How long until you run out of talking points?”
That is the question you have to ask yourself when you are considering a website topic.
Whether you are technically “passionate” about your topic or not is sort of besides the point. If you are truly passionate about your topic but you happen to be really uninformed about it, then that is not necessarily going to help much. On the other hand if you are mildly excited about your topic but you have vast experience with it and go on and on for hours about it, then that will serve you well in internet marketing.
Do you have to be an expert? Yes and no. I think you either need to be an expert about your topic, or you need to be becoming one. That is where the “passionate person” can slide into this business and make it work, even if they do not really know what they are talking about at first. They can learn. And if they are truly passionate about their topic then they can learn a lot of information very quickly and build a website and a business out of what they learn.
What type of knowledge is most valuable to have about your topic? It is not just that you need to have so many sticking points in your arguments, or that you can prattle on for hours. Instead, you need to have a unique stance, a unique argument, a unique solution for people that is your own original ideas. What is the current worldview of your topic and your problem, and do you have your own unique opinion of how things really are, and how things actually should be? If so, then this is a huge positive and you are on the right path. You need to have more than just a forwards and backward working knowledge of your topic. Instead, you need to have your own original ideas about the topic. You need unique insight.
My flagship website is a good example of this. It is about the field of addiction and recovery. But instead of just towing the line and talking about 12 step programs and the typical industry solutions, I talk quite a bit about how the industry is broken, and how success rates are terrible, and now here are my ideas on how to fix it. Here is my philosophy of recovery from addiction that is not dependent on this old broken system that fails so many people. Here is my idea of success in recovery and here is how it works for me and here is how it can work for you too. So there is a huge piece of that message that is original and highly valuable to the person who is seeking for solutions online.
Think deeply about your topic and how you can provide solutions for people. Think about how you have achieved success within your topic with some sort of unique angle. If you are just recycling old information that is found elsewhere on the web then that does not benefit anyone. You have to have original ideas and real insight for people. If you run out of talking points in 5 or 10 minutes about your topic then you are probably nowhere near the level of expert that your topic needs in order to have a valuable website with real solutions.
Either be the expert, or become the expert. Either way, if you want to succeed with your topic, you have to have it down cold.
You have to have it down so well, in fact, that you go beyond the traditional wisdom and start offering your own ideas and unique insight. That is the level of success that you need to shoot for.
