Why You Aren’t Making Any Money Online Yet
You started a website.
You heard about the dream of passive income, that you might be able to make money while you are sleeping from this internet thing. It sounds so enticing, so easy to do once you have the system in place.

So you started a website, and now you are just waiting to start cashing big checks.
The only problem is, there doesn’t seem to be any money flowing in just yet.
What gives?
I’ll tell you exactly why you aren’t making any money online yet:
You don’t own an authority website.
Plain and simple. If you want to make big money online then you need a big and powerful website. Not just some chintzy little niche site that gets tossed around whenever Google gets an itchy finger, but a real, value packed, sustainable business.
You need an authority website.
And since a valuable asset like a profit earning website is so darn expensive to purchase, you are probably going to have to build it yourself. Of course, the mini course on this website shows you how to do exactly that, but let me go a bit further and give you some extra pointers here:
What NOT to focus on
It is so easy to get distracted in a sea of internet marketing tips and tactics. If you read the popular meta-blogs that attempt to explain internet marketing, you will be pretty much overwhelmed with so many different tips, tactics, and marketing strategies that it will make your head spin.
If you read internet marketing websites they will tell you to do all sorts of things such as:
* Build an email marketing list.
* Build up RSS readers and subscribers to your website.
* Experiment with paid traffic such as PPC.
* Develop a product that you can sell directly to your traffic to make more profit.
* Use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to build a bigger audience and drive more traffic to your site.
And so on. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but just a taste of what common advice would have you do.
I recommend that you ignore most all of it, and instead focus on what is really important.
What to focus on
In my opinion, the number one thing to focus on is increasing your daily search engine traffic.
There are a number of arguments against this, actually. The main one is that “you do not want to depend too heavily on Google to send you traffic or you are at great risk when they change their algorithm.”
This is a valid concern, but it should not necessarily stop you from pursuing this strategy. Why?
Because having your focus on search engine traffic is also a great overall strategy, period.
Consider that the basic tactics involved in pursuing this search traffic include:
* Publishing large amounts of original, high quality content.
* Covering your topic in extreme depth and detail from a unique perspective in order to be most helpful to the searcher and capture the maximum amount of traffic.
* Creating ultra high quality content on your site, such that people will link to it naturally over time (and thus increase referral and search traffic in the future).
* Creating exceptional quality content forms and spin offs such as eBooks, videos, and forums such that they all add value to site visitors and increase viral advertising and site stickiness.
Read each of these 4 points in isolation and you will see that they all focus on creating amazing quality stuff and a great user experience for your website visitors. All of these methods are geared towards increasing future search engine visibility.
For example, say that you create an outstanding eBook about your topic, and you are wondering if you should sell it or give it away for free. If you sell it you could earn a small side income from your site. But if you give it away for free, then you entice people to build links organically to you and share your stuff with real word-of-mouth marketing.
Therefore one of the most powerful strategies is to focus on delivering as much value as possible while asking for nothing in return from your website visitors. Do not monetize the site, do not ask for their email address, do not ask your visitors for favors or to do anything for you in exchange for content. Just give away amazingly good content for free, over and over again, until you have substantial search engine traffic.
“Kill them with quality,” is one way to describe this approach.
Take a look at your niche and see what other people are charging money for. See what they are selling as a product. Then, create something superior to that, and give it away for nothing at all. No charge.
Later on you can monetize and get creative and find all sorts of unique ways to make money from your traffic. With this sort of approach, you probably would not do bad just slapping up AdSense after building up your search engine traffic for a year or two.
The key is to focus on putting up amazingly good content and then aiming for organic link generation and viral marketing among your visitors. This is how to start your online business (first two or three years or so). Later on you can focus on increasing volume (publishing more content rather than focusing on uber-quality) and also on monetizing the traffic more efficiently.
Are you making the money that you want to be making yet?
Ask yourself: “How many unique visits do I get each day from search engines? A 1,000 uniques? Maybe 100?”
If you want to earn a decent income online then your goal with search engine traffic should always be “more.” Once you have oodles of search engine traffic pouring in, then you can get creative and do what you want with it. Up until that point, you need to focus on putting up incredibly high quality content and getting strong links pointing at it.
